Funded by a grant from the Guilford County Partnership for Children, the Family Life Council brings parents and teachers together to create a stronger cooperation between home and school. Parents and teachers of preschool age children attend seminars together to learn about children’s development, and strategies for living and working with young children. The premise for the training sessions has been that the parents know more about their individual child than the teachers and need to share that information. The teachers know more about meeting the educational needs of the children, and need to feel free to share their knowledge with the parents and seek their help. Dozens of studies point to one important conclusion: How the family becomes involved in their child’s education is more important than family background (income, parental education, marital status, family size, etc.).
Topics which are emphasized in the trainings include: decision making, supporting one another, teaching one another, learning new skills from one another, and communicating with one another.
