*Latoya, a participant in Good Beginnings for Teen
Parents, was 17 years old and had a 1 month old son. Her
parents had died and she was living with her older brother, who
was a college student. She had no prenatal care during her
entire pregnancy, which she kept secret until the birth of her
son because she was afraid to let anyone know. Through
participating in Good Beginnings for Teen Parents, Latoya
realized how important it is to have the support of others
during such a challenging time. She said, “I could see that I
was not alone anymore and other teen parents were going through
the same thing. I loved coming to the group because it helped me
to be a better mother and I didn’t feel bad about the things I
didn’t know.”

Testimonials:
I have had the opportunity to assist with 3
teen births since October. I am a doula in training which allows me
to provide comfort and support to these young women during
childbirth. Research has shown that having a doula present,
especially for teen moms improves birth outcomes. There is more
mom/baby interaction, the teens are more likely to breastfeed, their
babies are more likely to have healthy birth weights, and there is a
decreased chance of an epidural and cesarean birth. It has been a
life changing and humbling experience to witness the births of these
babies. I have built long lasting relationships with these young
women and continue to provide them education, support, and skills
needed to be effective in their parenting.

"During the weekly sessions, we learned how to understand our babies, when to call the doctor, safety issues, information on nutrition, and what it takes to be a parent. The group decided it takes lots of patience."
