Parenting & Family Education Programs


Positive Parenting

Positive Parenting is a six week series designed for parents of school aged children. The goal of the program is to enhance basic parenting techniques and improve communication between parents and children. Those who are seeking to retain or regain custody of their children are primary referrals. 

Mondays, November 10-December 15, 2008

    November 10: Positive Parenting
    November 17: Child development and safety
    November 24: Discipline
    December 1: Anger Management
    December 8: Issues that impact parenting
    December 15: Problem Solving

  • Time: 5:30-7:00 Location: Dorothy Bardolph Human Services Building, 301 E. Washington Street, 2nd floor library, Greensboro, NC
  • Cost: $30/person or $40/couple for the entire series. Can be paid over time but full payment is expected by the last class. ($20 returned check fee)

The Family Life Council works to support healthy families through family life education programs. Let us partner with you to build strong, positive relationships with your school community.

One Time Programs

Parent Education Series

These programs appeal to busy parents! Schedule morning “coffee talks”, lunch-and-learns, or evening programs. These can be scheduled on their own or to enhance an event already on your calendar such as a PTA meeting, book fair night, etc. Our most requested topics include:

  • Success from the Start: Helping your child succeed in school
  • Positive Discipline that Works!
  • Tough Topics and Scary Stuff
  • Sexplanations: Strategies for parents for talking with children/adolescents

 

These 3-6 session series are opportunities to learn new skills, apply them in real life, and then return for discussion, questions, and more learning. Available series include:

  • Active Parenting NOW (for parents of 2-12 year olds)
  • Active Parenting of Teens (for parents of preteens and teens)
  • Parenting Children of Divorce (for separated and divorced parents)
  • Survival Skills for Healthy Families (for all families)

 

Staff Development

All of our programs and series can be adapted for educators. Teacher favorites include:

  • Effectively Working with Parents
  • Difficult Conversations with Parents

Survival Skills for Healthy Families:

Family connections are as important as ever, but hectic schedules and life stresses can get in the way.  Parents with children of all ages are invited to learn new strategies and practice old ones to build strong family relationships.

Boot Camp for Parents of Teens

Attention!  Are you preparing to battle your adolescent through their teenage years?  If so, then cease fire.  Do an “about face” and “fall in” for this training for parents of 6th-12th graders.  Wouldn’t you rather be “at ease” with teen?

24/7 Dads™

24/7 Dad is a 12-session best practice program that works to create “24/7 Dads” who enhance the well-being of their children by being an integral part of their lives physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This program is made possible by a grant to Family Life Council from the North Carolina Department of Social Services and we are pleased to share it with our community. PARENTING CHILDREN OF DIVORCE - GREENSBORO

Thursday classes 7:00 - 9:00pm
Saturday classes 8:30am - 12:30pm
$40.00/person per series
Dorothy Bardolph Building , 2nd Floor Board Room

Attend this program to learn more about how to help children cope positively with their parents’ separation or divorce. This program is for parents, but is also appropriate for stepparents and grandparents. Each session is led by an attorney and a mental health professional. Pre-registration is required.

Complete the Prepare Inventory to strengthen your marriage before it begins!

Couples complete a questionnaire individually.  The results of the inventories are summarized and couples then meet for up to 4 sessions with someone trained to administer and interpret the inventory.  The Guilford County Marriage Resource Center is able to offer this $250 opportunity for $80 to a limited number of couples.  To learn more or to set up an appointment, contact Rebecca Starnes at info@flcgso.com

Active Parenting Facilitator Training

Learn to lead workshops for parents to support healthy and successful parenting.  This one-day training will equip you to lead either Active Parenting NOW or Active Parenting of Teens. the cost $149.  Call Active Parenting Publishers at 1-800-825-0060 to register. 

GROWING UP...ONE STEP AT A TIME:

Cost is $5 for childcare credit (1.5 hrs) and pre-registration is required.
