Wise Guysâ for ATHLETES

Student athletes have the challenge of balancing academics, athletics, social and family lives, and often much more. This teen pregnancy and STI prevention program for male athletes helps develop positive attitudes, knowledge, leadership, and healthy decision making skills.

The benefits include: better athletes, better students, fewer teen fathers, and healthier men. Upon completion, many graduates have become advocates for the program’s positive messages with their peers and younger males as well.

Initiated at Shelby High School by the Cleveland County Health Department, this program has been successfully replicated in several cities in North Carolina and may be replicated in other parts of the country. Professional trainings for coaches, athletic directors, and other school personnel are available.

" I believe the program has really helped our guys better understand and show respect for our young ladies…

Several of them have done assemblies at the middle school and elementary schools and have had a real impact on those kids as well. I believe in the potential of this program to build better athletes, and better men.

Becoming fathers now would potentially devastate many of my best athletes’ potential for college and a future. The Wise Guys program is doing a great job of reminding them of this fact and helping them make good decisions."
