Professional Training

Interest in the Wise Guysâ program has spread across the country, and many communities from coast to coast have implemented the program with diverse groups of males in a variety of settings Program trainings are available for educators and other professionals who would like to start the Wise Guysâ program in their own communities.  The Wise Guys speakers and trainers will work with you to develop a training to meet the needs of your agency and community. TRAINING OBJECTIVES

All participants will:

  • Review the Wise Guysâ program philosophy, logistics, and curriculum.
  • Learn how to initiate & implement the program in their community.
  • Understand the program’s evaluation model and how to make it work.
  • Understand the perceptions young men have about sexuality and masculinity and
  • how they influence sexuality education.
  • Gain hands-on experience in designing and delivering program lesson plans.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This training is designed for individuals who would like to develop and implement adolescent prevention programs for teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and STIs, and dating violence programs targeting young males in their communities.  The training is also for individuals who instruct or supervise adolescent males, such as coaches, counselors, and mentors.

PROGRAM IMPACT

Analysis of data, collected since 1991 indicates the following positive outcomes of the Wise Guysâ program from program entry to six-month follow-up:

Wise Guysâ students showed:

  • Improved knowledge of sexuality and consequences of sexual activity
  • Healthier sex role attitudes
  • Increased communication with parents and teachers about sexuality

Furthermore:

  • Participants in the Wise Guysâ program showed a significant delay in sexual activity as compared to non-program students.
  • The percentage of sexually active Wise Guysâ students who reported always using contraception also increased significantly.
